Growing Salvia Plants

It's not as easy as you might expect.

Growing salvia plants by yourself can be kind of hard beca the salvia plant has some unique features. Salvia is a cultigen, meaning it doesn't grow in the wild anymore and it has been domesticated by humans. Salvia plants (and most other cultigen species) can't produce offspring of their own. It's rare for a salvia plant produce seed. Most people who try to get salvia plants to grow from seed are unsuccessful.

Salvia plants bloom with flowers a lot, and it's really kind of easy to make salvia plants blossom inside a greenhouse, but the difficult task is trying to pollinate the otherwise sterile flowers by hand and get seeds that can be used to grow more salvia plants later.

The best way to succeed at growing a salvia divinorum plant is to start off with cuttings (live pieces taken from another salvia plant) and use the cuttings to clone the plant you took them from. Since it's the easiest way to grow a salvia plant, I am going to go over the method of cultivating salvia plants, beginning with the cloning stage.

The natural environment for salvia plants is in Oaxaca, Mexico, where the plant originally grew in remote ravines, highlands, and some other almost inaccessible areas that get plenty of sunlight, humidity, and has warm weather throughout the year. From there, the salvia divinorum plant was taken by humans and moved to a more convenient location to be harvested. The natural light cycle for growing salvia plants is 50/50, meaning 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness. The best choice is to grow salvia plants at 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit, but they can survive in colder temperatures, although the growing slows down if the temperature drops much.

Salvia plants are also accustomed to having plenty of moisture in the air in its natural environment, so it is good to frequently spray your plants with a soft mist of clean water. Misting your plants also helps keep your salvia leaves clean, which improves the health of the plant. Some people have had great success growing salvia plants inside of a humidity tent, which is basically just a small greenhouse tent that keeps in moisture and heat and also lets in sunlight light to the plants. A simple and acost-effective "greenhouse tent" can be made by wrapping plastic wrap from the lights hanging over the salvia plants you're growing. Just be sure it's not so close to the lights that it will melt.

Salvia plants start growing very slowly at first, and every time you transplant it to a new pot the growth will slow down a bit more until it adapts to its new home. Moving a plant from one pot to another causes some stress to the plant, so always handle it with care. A larger and stronger plant recovers quicker than a small plant. A good fertilizer will also help to improve the recovery time for salvia plants after being moved.

If you are growing salvia divinorum plants to achieve leaf mass, be certain you are using a pot large enough so the roots of the plant will have plenty of room to grow, because if the pot restricts the roots growth, you will get less salvia.

Salvia plant stems are weak and can break if they get too long to support the leaf weight. But, f the broken stem falls and lands on the soil, don't mess with it because it will root and the plant will still survive.

There are two different strains of salvia plant cuttings that people usually grow. The first species is the smallest, but strongest variety of salvia grown today and it's called the "Hoffman and Wasson" strain. The 2nd popular strain of salvia is called the "blosser/palatable" variety and it is the newest strain that was brought over from Mexico around 1990.

For people who eat salvia, they claim the blosser/palatable strain to have less of a bitter taste than the Hoffmann and Wasson variety.

In closing, I'll say that if you just want some salvia to smoke, it's much easier and more affordable to just buy it online.
